Was wondering if could get some options on this blade? I haven’t seen another example. Thoughts?

Interesting piece. Hmm, perhaps East Indian? The floral etchings, hilt style and clipped point make me suspect this, but just a guess!

I am not remembering but will pursue, is the hanging, open fire roasts and the meat being shaved. The 'swords' hanging a strap, or chain. Both sides of the continents but this looks mideastern. Same principal though, a big carving knife, hung by the pit, making an impression for diners.
I'll find that old discussion. 'Shawarma' I may be seeing the same carver. Cheers GC |

Hi Glenn. That was going to be my second guess!
No, seriously, I was thinking about some of the cutting knives that came with Germanic trousses, but what you are saying makes total sense. An interesting item either way...

Thank you gentlemen. I can certainly see the resemblance to Near Eastern or East Indian carving blades, particularly in the clipped profile and decorative treatment. The suspended “shawarma” comparison is actually quite interesting and not something I had considered.
What continues to puzzle me, however, is the overall heft and execution of the piece. The blade geometry feels far more substantial than most food preparation examples I have handled, and the etched borders almost suggest a ceremonial or presentation quality rather than purely utilitarian use. I also wondered whether there could be some crossover with Germanic or Balkan butchering and carving traditions, especially given the broad chopping profile. At the very least it seems to sit in that curious space between functional tool and display piece. I appreciate the insights. |
