Axe, if someone knows, origin, type?
I found in Milan Praunsperger book Weapons of old Croats similar axe it is caled Balta, it looks similar. Handle of the axe is definetly not original from the period, axe is very well made, tempered, it has engrawings, some of them looks like Italian marks ferrara used, arches with sun. It was rely nicely decorated but that deteriated over time. If someone knows origin or something about it? |

It looks like what the Hungarians call fokos, a battle axe. You are right the marks look Northern Italian. Maybe it was made there for the Eastern European market. Interestingly to my knowledge fokos don’t have langets. It looks fairly well used. The edge looks like it was lovingly sharpened many times so it’s not a decoration piece.

Thank you on info!
I never heard about fokos before, it does look very used, and it is very nice axe. With it i also acquired another one, i think it is chekn or something like that name, i saw several similar looking axes online, bit somebody cleaned it to the shining metal, inside of the shaft ring it is a old rust and patina, but outside was cleaned on my take is metal brush or some high speed polishing device, and someone driled holes on the sides. It is rather small axe, i think it is more some mix between spike and axe, for piercing helmets. But it isnt anything special, becouse somebody masacreted it with cleaning and driling holes, and allso it doesent have signs of wear or heavy use, and temeper of the point could be higher for piercing capabilities. Judging by the inner patina it is old, but. |
