Gentlemen, it's been quite a while, but I'm happy to share with you some photos of the cleaned sword.
First of all, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the guard consists of two parts. This is quite unusual, in my opinion. In any case, I have never seen such a design before. The first third of the blade is double-edged with a pronounced yelman. On one side of the blade there is a relatively wide and deep fuller and next to it a narrow one. In the wide fuller there are seven round depressions, in one of which the remains of a copper alloy are visible. On the other side of the blade is only narrow fuller. |

It still unclear to me whether the blade was originally narrower under the tunkou, or whether it rotted in that area and was lost during cleaning.

Nicely treated for the next 1000 years :-), the recess doesn't look like oxidation to me; it's too symmetrical. I also noticed the round recesses in the fuller; there might have been some kind of decoration there.

Since the blade appeared to have round copper inserts at one time, could the rectangular cutout at the base of the hilt at one time also have been adorned with copper, brass, etc., which is now missing?

I don't remember seeing blades with a similar recess. Do they exist? |
