These 2 pictures i found very interesting. The first link is that of the Grandes Chroniques de France 1332-1350 (http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer...._16_g_vi_f181v).
It shows a box with roped sticks (?) which are lit. the second link shows a page from the 1420s feuerwerkbuch with a similar roped stick.
