Glad you acquired the sword and will, hopefully be able to pass it down to future Bowditch...es (?)
Your grandfather's tale is not unlike that of J.L. Chamberlain, an academic who served his country to the utmost for decades, beginning with his enlistment in the Union Army against his parents' wishes, as I recall... he was from Maine, perhaps he knew your granddad.
