It really does, Ariel, but this pattern doesn’t have the abrupt and well-defined “U-turn” that we would see on a more traditional “hairpin” pattern weld.

Nice to find one with such a nicely carved hilt. Have you tried etching the blade? Some of these have spectacular pattern welded blades.

Generally when I see octagonal hilts and ferrules I think of Sulu, but I have also learned not to be to "rules" oriented when identifying a piece's origin.:)
