The pommel and upper guard of this sword are decorated with linear inlays of silver and copper wire running parallel with the length of the blade. Such a design would be made by hammering wire into a shallow groove cut in the base iron. Some of the wires are twisted to give alternating exposures of silver and copper. A similar pattern would be expected on the lower guard, were it present, based on other examples; the lower guard would also be expected to have the same general outline as the upper guard, but to be slightly wider.
