Default MARANAO KRIS?

Hi friends,

Sharing with you this kris. It has a small sticker which indicate that this is a Maranao kris.

Can you confirm this this is indeed Maranao?

The blade is of the straight type (sundang espada), OAL: 26.5 inches.
Hilt: wood with woven rattan and white metal ferrule. At the end of the hilt (pommel side) is a decorative white metal ring with scalloped edges.

I love the 'design' on the blade itself.

Enjoy and regards,

Yves

I would say close. This might in fact be Maguindanao based on the ganga, hilt, and scabbard top.

Hi Sir,

Is the 'design' on the blade itself damascus? or something else?

Many thanks,

Yves

Hi Yves,

The hilt and scabbard look post WWII, maybe 1960-1970s. Most likely a Maranao blade IMHO. The dress looks Maranao also.

The blade has linear lamination, which is common on kris of a certain era.

The view from my monitor, to me the blade looks like it has shallow waves.

I see them too, in the rear half of the blade, the forward half looks straight.

Agreed! Not a sundang espada after all.

Wink MARANAO KRIS?

Hi,

Immediately I did a up-close scrutiny on the blade. yes, there are shallow (upper bakukum/tungo) waves and very shallow waves (lower bakukum/tungo) of the blade. I count 7 waaves which run from neear the start of the hilt up to the middle part of the blade. So, in this case, it is a ranti/luma blade.

Many thanks for the information. Appreciate it.

Kind regards,

Yves
