You could possibly use some cold gun blueing or browning solution to color the copper??. You should be able to obtain said product from your local gun shop. If the result is not satisfactory then it is easily removed by re-polishing the metal.
By the way it would appear from your photos that the other side of the guard has been broken at some stage also.
