Default Strange repair to shamshir cross guard - Advice needed

Hi everyone. I received a battered shamshir. Upon cleaning the crossguard I found a part of the guard is copper, an old repair. Superficially the copper was covered with some (metal ?) material. Cleaning made the copper more exposed. Can someone suggest if that can be recovered and what material and repair is it?

You could possibly use some cold gun blueing or browning solution to color the copper??. You should be able to obtain said product from your local gun shop. If the result is not satisfactory then it is easily removed by re-polishing the metal.
By the way it would appear from your photos that the other side of the guard has been broken at some stage also.

I am curious about what is covering the copper in the first place that upon cleaning revealed the copper underneath.

Hello MARW,

Could it be some kind of glue or repair compound instead of copper? When it's indeed copper it could be a hard soldering repair. From the pics you posted it looks like the first!
And I agree with Stu, the other side looks repaired also.

Regards,
Detlef
