Thought was Spanish?

What makes this a British naval dirk? A recurved guard?

This is a civilian mid-19th century English-style 'bowie-like' dirk, imho...

I'll bite again. What makes this handle at all "bowie-like" While iv'e seen a lot of variations on bowie knives this is not one that seems all that commom.
