Is the bolster at the base of the blade octagonal in cross section? If so, that would be unusual.
I think a clean and etch on one side would be sufficient to see whether there is a twist core in the central panel. |

Or you could use something like wax or chapstick or something like that over the accession number as a resist, then etch the rest.
Nice blade and rare to have the scabbard, much less a complete scabbard, much less a well carved one like this. |
