			As Jim has shown here it is based on the early 19th c French models. One would expect this one to be older but Yours is around 1890 - 1910 and was mainly worn by people in political functions. We see these quite often here , they are also called ' Mayor swords" ( Burgemeester degen ) . 			Ulbreth, I read somewhere that the House of Orange-Nassau coat of arms and motto on my sword hilt came into use with Willaim I in 1815 and went out of use in 1907.

			Ulfberth, in the pictures you showed, how were those swords attached to the wearer's waist? What kind of fixture attached a sword like that to one's belt? Thanks very much.
