Oil the wood when possible, it's care for the piece and will preserve it for future generations!

The suitable strategy also depends on the climate: If you experience spells of high humidity, boiled linseed oil (and other similar natural oils/formulations) will promote growth of fungus.

If storage conditions can't be reliably controlled, I'm not sure what would be the best strategy under such environmental settings...
