			I suspect defense only but there may also be symbolism behind this too. To have your thumb stuck in there only offers it as bait.   Gavin |

			To the best of my knowledge the idea is that you'd hold the dagger with the ring on the outside, ie the opposite side from your thumb. Much like a side ring on a sword, it should be primarily there to protect your hand from your opponent's sword.
