Bali or Java??

Hello Marco,
Nice and uncommon specimen, is it old or artificially aged? I am not sure about the Balinese origin because of the size and absence of integrated selut.

The patina said me old. I think far east Java... but of course not sure. The seller told me it comes from java.

If it is old I would say East Java tip (in front of Bali) also.

I have several Bali hilts which have a high of 10 cm or less and also a hilt which one don't have a integrated selut so I think that this isn't imperative a sign of a Java origin. But it is of course possible that it might be a hilt from east Java with strong Bali influence.

The style of this hilt has a Balinese influence and I also have several Balinese hilts without selut or integrated selut but with a narrow base (rounded or truncated), this one seems to have a wide and flat base which does not match with a Balinese cincin? There is no visible trace of a former metal selut covering the base which would of course identify the hilt as Balinese, may be Marco could confirm?

Yes there is on trace of metal selut (or mendak ) at the base

Good point made by Jean. Although the figure and decorative is more 'appropriate' Balinese style, the execution on the base especially remind of Madura hilt. So I vote Java (Madura).
