Just picked this up seems to be 19th century could be Indian from Kerala ? Let me know what you think?

I am sorry. It seems to me is not an old subject. The Beginning-middle of 20 centuries. Not 19 centuries.

I think I can see a cold shut on the spine; so hand forged ?
Dimensions Lew ?
The handle/bolster style is unfamiliar to me .

I really do not think this is mid 20th century maybe 1900 - 1920 at the latest? Will know more once it arrives. Still it seems to be a nicely made piece. What puzzles me is the strange shaped hilt never saw one like that before? They are usually of a birds head design this one is squared?

I thought it might be Kerala due to those small diagonal marks on the hilt. I have a small copper knife that has the same marks on the hilt.

Rick here is the other Kerala knife I was talking about notice it has a same two grooves in the hilt.

Well the Pesh arrived today so I put a light etch on it and it turned out to be wootz

. There are a few dead spots but in all it turned out to be a nice knife. Will try and take some pics this weekend.

Hi All

Here are a couple of closeups of the blade after etching. As you can see there is a nice wootz pattern but the smith probably over heated the steel a bit due to the dead spots where the pattern does not come through. Btw the blade in 8 inches long.
