Question about Bugis hilts - Ethnographic Arms & Armour

If I were a hilt carver I would want to use a smaller tooth; less waste and cost that way . Possibly these 'dented' Bugis hilts are all from the toothed whales ? The Bugis are traditionally great seafarers and traders . A connection ?
