I am looking into another German museum trip. I have two options in mind. The cost is a consideration.

Frankfurt base, visit ethnographic museum, drink beer eat food. Next day train to Heidelberg ethnographic collection, back to Frankfurt eat drink fly home. Cheapest option. Stuttgart base, visit ethnographic museum, drink beer eat food. Next day train to Heidelberg and so on. More expensive and less flight options. Question is; which base has the better collection? if it is possible to say one is better than the other? but some museums are better than others. |

sadly I have to say forget Frankfurt, they have only very few space to show what they have therefore is only shown very small mottoes exhibitions. I have been there in spring and was very disapointed. Regards, Detlef |

I have heard that the museum island in Berlin should be a very interesting place - but I have never been there.

I am sure you in Berlin will find plenty of good food, and gallons of beer:-):-). Should you not be a 'gallon man' they do, on request, also sell beer in smaller quantities. |

All the ethnological museums you named are rather small. Heidelberg is a good one because of the South Sea collection. Stuttgart has a nice African and East Asian collection, but unfortunately, they closed their American exhibition.

Thanks for the replies. I have made up my mind and made early booking to get the best prices. Stuttgart, small does not mean bad. Hamberg is small but a super museum. I am most looking forward to Heidelberg. Stuttgart is the nearest airport for BA flights so I will be busy. Also Otto Dix going to be fun.

Thanks ariel. Yes I will take in Karlsruhe. Dresden is not on a direct flight route so not easy to visit. I can only afford a max 4 night stay on museum trips.

Forget flying and take your car to visit the "Veste Coburg" in Bavaria with an extremely good special exhibition of ethnograhic arms, the Werner Uhlmann Collection with about 200 different arms.

Don't listen to us. Otherwise, your 4 day trip will keep you in Germany forever and you will be counted among the Brexit migrants:-) |

I have found Stuttgart will be an excellent base. Train to Heidelberg and a big day out train to Munich. Mention Brexit once more and I will start crying again, only just managed to wipe the last tears away.

From what I have seen so far, you should take three month off, and when you are at it, you should also visit Wienna, as they have a very big collection 'left over to them' by the Turks. The town is worth a visit as well, and the people very kind:-). |
