That is some shield . A very nice interpretation of the original. There's no space left to carve.

What are the dimensions? Thanks for sharing. |

Never seen an original, but yours is a very nice piece of art. It looks quite solid too so I guess it can make for a very functional shield as well.

Congratulations for your masterpiece! ![]() PS: I don't think is an "attempt" but a certain success! Last edited by mariusgmioc; 2nd July 2016 at 07:46 PM. |

It's a commission shield for a datu decent, and the diameter itself is majestic at 33". Weigh at a whopping 15 lbs. Made for a strong man indeed. Had difficulty finding a tree with that girth. Plus the project took a month, hand carved without power tools!

MAGNIFICENT WORKMANSHIP USING TRADITIONAL CARVING METHODS AND PATTERNS. I WOULD CALL THIS A RECREATION OF AN AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL RATHER THAN A REPLICA OR PURELY ART. IT WOULD BE JUST AS FUNCTIONAL AS AN ORIGINAL FOR REAL FIGHTING WITH THE RATTAN RIM GUARD TO REDUCE EDGE SPLITTING AND HAS THE REQUIRED THICKNESS AND WEIGHT TO PROTECT AS WELL AS TO STRIKE WITH. A TRUE SHIELD MADE TOO LATE FOR ACTUAL USE BUT AS A WALL HANGER OR FOR PARADE OR CEREMONY BUT A REAL SHIELD ALL THE SAME. ITS GOOD TO SEE THAT THE SKILL AND DESIRE TO PRODUCE ITEMS OF SUCH QUALITY STILL EXISTS.
