			Hello,

A colleague from another forum has this Kindjal and asked for a translation. It would be great if anyone can help. I read the number 1187, but no matter if you use the Hidjra or the Persian calendar, that can't be the year when it was made, that's too old. I would say 1930's at best and the origin could be Persia (because of the bone work) or Syria (because of the silver Koftgari) but I'm not sure. Any comments welcome. Regards Robin |

Strictly speaking, this is not a Kindjal. Kindjal is a russified version of the name for a Caucasian ( and Transcaucasian) straight double-edged dagger, locally called Khandjali in Georgian, a name derived from Persian Khanjar. Turkish name is Kama ( Qama). This one is a typical Qajar era based on the carvings on its bone scabbard. It is dated 1187, ie 1773-4 Gregorian, well before the Qajar era (1789-1925). Is it Ottoman or Persian is difficult to be sure: this is a touristy item, made all over, including Syria. Hence the dating.

Likely ( IMHO) late 19-first half of 20 cen.). I fully agree with all of your points. |
