This is a wolf's ankle bone, a good luck charm from Mongolia. There's all sorts of rules for how it "works". It doesn't work if you buy one, you have to kill the wolf yourself or steal the bone from someone else. You also have to keep it in the lowest, dirtiest place in your house, like under your washing machine in the basement or something. To show it who's boss I guess.

I was given it as a gift, I'm not sure if that means it "works" or not.

I don't 100% understand it, but the luck has something to do with the wolf "allowing" you to kill it. Even seeing a wolf is good luck. When they do kill a wolf, they strap it to the hood of their car and drive around town to show it off.

So maybe stealing it preserves the luck because you outsmarted the guy who outsmarted the wolf? |
