AXE FOR DISCUSSION ?

Have had this axe ? sitting in my collection for sometime. Your thoughts on this item would be appreciated. You will notice from the photographs that the blade can be fitted in both the vertical and horizontal planes. Could this item have a duel role or not be a fighting item at all. The item also looks to have blind holes drilled into the shaft for decoration. The nearest match I have found so far is African possibly Chokwe.

Based on the way the head can be fitted in both the vertical and horizontal planes I would would guess that this is more of a tool than a weapon. Or at least something that could be used as a tool as well as a weapon.

It reminds me of the mattock I used to have in the shed!

Yes, that's correct : it's a Chokwe axe.

Strange that the blade can be fitted both ways. Then the axe becomes an adze.

Thanks for the responses so far. Have just researched chokwe Adze on this forum and google and it seems that this item could also have been used as a symbol of power similar to a prestige staff or mace.

Hi Velay,
Thanks for your response, I notice that your items have two different types of blades flat like mine and also one with what looks like a round shaft close to where the axe head enters the handle. Are they both able to be used in the horizontal and vertical planes? Also the one with the metal type stud work looks to be of finer quality, does this mean it is for someone of higher status? (or am I jumping to conclusions)

the blade is fixed on the two axes, the blade is thick on both axes ...
