New and somewhat lacking in finish,but what is it and where is it from?

IT IS A WEDONG, OR WEDUNG DEPENDING ON THE INFO. IT IS FROM BALI OR LOMBOK ISLANDS IN INDONESIA. THERE HAVE BEEN POSTS ON THEM SO YOU CAN LOOK FOR MORE INFO USING THE SEARCH FUNCTION IN CURRENT AND PAST FORUM ARCHIVE. NOT A OLD ONE BUT A NICE EXAMPLE NONE THE LESS.

Vandoo, I agree it has a lot of Wedung features but it has almost as many unlike a wedung. The seller thought it was African. Heres a link http://old.blades.free.fr/swords/par...d01/wedung.htm It shows a longer extension of the blade re-enforcing the hilt and perhaps giving more strength for chopping. Also the clip for a sash is on the front, both may only be a cheaper way to manufacture the knife. Oh, the blade is small about 6 1/2 inches long. thank you for your quick response and advice I'll look further in old posts. Steve

I strongly doubt it's African .
Indonesian it is; not quite a Wedung; it reminds me of recent Batak work .

A Balinese or Lombok Wedung differs from the Javanese Wedung. I think Vandoo nailed this one perfect.
It is modern work. And the way the scabbard and hilt are made suggest that the carver is linking to Batak work. But it is a Wedung.
