				 | 17th century rapier with head stamp

I recently acquired this rapier which i gather is 17th century. There is a head shaped stamp on both sides of the blade which i can not identify. Blade length is 83cm and total is 97cm. Any help would be most welcome |

Congratulations on your acquisition. Staffan Kinman’s European Makers of Edged Weapons, Their Marks (2015) lists two Solingen smiths with marks consisting of Moorish heads: i) Johan (Johannis) Beugel 1648-1688 and ii) Peter the Elder Munsten zu Elberfeld 1552-1628.

Great looking sword, but technically not a rapier. More of a broad sword with a mortuary or walloon style hilt/guard.

True. These type of swords have many names like Felddegen, Reiterdegen, Walloon sword, etc.

Thank you all for your insights, does anyone also have this specific makers mark in a reference book for me please? |

They would have called it a Sword. Modern useage would call it an 'arming' or 'one-handed' sword. Broadsword (as one word) is more used for Scottish basket hilted double edged swords.

See post #2 above. Kinman’s book is highly recommended.
