Nice Engraved Katar For Comment
Hi All
This just arrived. The blade in 9.5" long 18.5 total length. It has some type or floral engraving in the panels. I did a quick etch and it has some type of sham wootz pattern but I can't be sure what kind it is. There is some type of writing on the side bar and upper cross bar? Lew Lew |

very nice.
i doubt it is sham watering, but rather tight, chrystalised indian wootz as this was more common to this kind of katar. always could be an acception to the rule though! i think both inscriptions are upside down. a good piece! |

Yes it looks as if the inscriptions are upside down – what about the inscription close to the blade?

Nice katar Lew!! Could the signes that i have evidenced (sorry Lew to to have edited your pic
 ) be an indication for an original scissor katar blade rehilted in a simpler version? Just an idea

No this blade has nothing to do with a scissor blade. These markings which you point out are often seen on katar blades.
Is there any decoration at all on the side guards and the cross guards? Are there other insctiptions than the ones you have shown? |

Hi Flavio, no reason to be sorry. Most of the scissor blades you see are very big and clumsy, but they were also made slim and elegant, although it is seldom to see these blades.

I believe the inscriptions are museum (or private collection) accession numbers:
CA-3 Y 7 (or an incomplete 9) in the last photo (upside down) CA-3Y and Y9[something] in the second-to-last photo |

Hi Flavio,
Your welcome. For one of the more elegant scissor katars see Stone page 345 no one and two. The third one shown is strange in the way, that the outer katar does not have crossbars; it is only the inner katar, which has cross bars. I have a few double katars but on mine both the outer and the inner katar have gross bars. |
