Manufacturer on 17th century musket

Hello everybody,

Could someone identify this manufacturer on my musket: "IX DUNAN".

Do you have an exact date for this model?

"XI DVNAN" is certainly not the maker of the gun which has been manufactured around 1600. As there are no marks on the lock or barrel at all, it is very hard to decide where this piece has been made. May be at Suhl, may be in Danmark may be in the Netherlands. My fotos show a gun made at Suhl and it has big similarities to your gun.

Could it be that the mark is not of a manufacturer, but that of something else, like a town, the owner's name ... or whatever symbol?
While no member shows up with the possible identification, you may look into threads submited by (deceased) member "Matchlock", like THIS ONE where you will find plenty info on this type of muskets and locks.

Perhaps an owner's or regiment's name. Or the blacksmith of the cannon.
If we could go back 400 years to verify

Could DUNAN be a form of the name DUNANT or DUNAND ???

There were several DUNANT in Geneva in the period 1586-1653 (see Stoeckel).

Dunan is a very common name. Good idea for IX, I was thinking of a number but the initials of a first name seem more likely to me, yes!

There are 2 possibilities here.

1) That this is the 9th musket in the company commanded by an officer of the name.

2)That this is a private musket held in a communal armoury, either for use by the owner or a part of the owner's collection of weapons, to be used by men not wealthy enough to buy their own muskets.

Both are possible and without knowing where the musket came from & how town militias were organised in that area, it's going to be difficult to decide which applies here
