Default Yataghan Sarajevo

with reference to the "Bosnian Bichaq" thread and "knife and fork" thread, please find enclosed the belonging / accompanying yataghan:

- made in 1882-1885 for the Burgomaster of Sarajevo for dignitary occasions
(during the visit of Franz-Josef, Franz Ferdinand and other representative purposes)

- length :

66 cm with scabbard
62 cm without scabbard
48 cm blade
blade width between 3,5 cm ( hilt /handle ) to 3 cm ( 35 cm down)
14 cm handle
52 cm scabbard

scabbard is wood covered with red colored leather
chape, finial and locket made from copper

the red threads came with it and were supposed to be original
( they look very old indeed)

as stated previously, after the occupation of Bosnia and Hercegovian in 1878 by Austria, the making of yataghans and bichaqs were prohibited by the Austrians

The only exception was in 1882 a limited production for militairy and Habsburgian dignitaries use only.
Knives, kamas, bichaqs, trousses and cuttlery were made more frequent, also through the years and in bigger numbers.
Of this yataghan a few only had been made.

See one of the below pictures (the third) giving an overview of all the 6 different types made between 1882 -1916
