My apologies for not responding on this interesting suggestion. The case for the use of European blades in the edged weapons of numerous tribal peoples in Africa is well established. The use of brass is prevalent in a number of regions in West Africa in varying processes, and the use of dots, tacks etc. is also a recurring decorative element.
However the hilt here is directly comparable to the forms of Scottish dirks as shown.
