Good point- although it's very much possible to isolate the imagery based on the traditions inherent in each Moro tribe within a specific era- in my example, since it's vintage Maranao sarimanok and...

Necro'ing this thread because I fancied putting a Maranao kris (with a vintage hilt) beside my vintage sarimanok.

It's pretty close- but in the correct-side-up orientation, not in the upside-down...

Halloo Ian! I think the pommel represents either lineage or political alignment. I'm betting it was made sometime pre-war, most conservative estimate would be postwar.

When I encountered this kris, I immediately remembered this thread and my assertion that the figural may be a naga, or snake. I encountered this pre-WW2 Maguindanao kris blade with a Maranao hilt...

That's right- as of modern time, both the Warays and Cebuanos use "sundang" as a catch-all term for just about any blade :)

Halloo sir! It's part of the "name game" as others in this forum have noted before.

In the area where that blade came from (Leyte/Samar), "sundang" is a catch-all term for long fighting blades....

Really nice sundang! I believe that one comes from Leyte, likely late 1800s.

I vote to leave the "absent" ferrule as is :)

Friends, thank you very much for the appreciative and kind words!

Halloo sir, it surprisingly didn't modify the "feel" of the blade as it cut. It did, however, benefit me, as the replacement hilt accommodated my large grip perfectly and I felt that I could retain...

Another atypical kris

This is an atypical kris, with a Mindanao Moro-made antique blade, re-dressed with a Christianized pinned hilt. The scabbard looks original, but the bands have been replaced; the upper one is marked...

Halloo Jeff! This a Maranao-made "keping." It's usually mistaken for barung since there are some slight similarities; but the overall aesthetic and blade profile is different.

Halloo! While "dipalata" is a very rare blade, IMO it's not the rarest. I've seen at least 12 (the one in this post is the 12th) samples of it already. The rarest is an extra-long hinalung-like sword...

I believe that the gangya may be a super-tightly fitted two-piece; I've encountered such pieces before- on visual, looks one-piece, but when I reset / apply heat gun, I would get a surprise when the...

Agreed- Maguin blade (Iranun another possibility), Mindanao dress (possibly Maguin or Iranun also, but not discounting Maranao-area side). I would further conjecture that the blade is nobility-type,...

Halloo again!

As a general rule, I was taught that a light and fast Kris blade, especially those without a central spine, would be worn by non-warriors: shopkeepers, dignitaries, business owners,...

Yes that's right! When I got the kamp, the patina was black; so I'm guessing it's nickel silver. It has the same patina as those found on sapot talibong; there's a good chance the cladding was also...

Halloo Ian! I believe the variety in length and tip-end is likely indicative of era and area nuances. I've noticed that relatively shorter kampilans (25in thereabouts) like this one tend to be light...

Odd kampilan

Some notes on this oddity:

-25.5in blade length, 35.5in overall.
-Hilt looks late 1800s.
-Blade is double-edged on the last 5 inches going to tip. The guard looks replaced.
-The guard and...

Sorry for the response delay!

I believe two asang-asang don't necessarily guarantee a Sulu connection. Thanks for the better pic! For the blade itself- I would posit Mindanao (Maranao or...
