I think his exact answer when I asked him why he wouldn't use one himself was "Because I know what kind of metal they make them out of." I presume he's talking about junky tourist ones.

He was an...

Here's my pichok from Uzbekistan. It's completely brand new. Two stories to share about it.

1: I was showing a Central Asian fellow my sword/knife collection. He didn't speak much English but he...

Apparently that's not a hamon, it's a hadori. It's a pattern polished into the blade to "enhance" the actual hamon (assuming there is one)

I took a gamble on a Tanto

Normally I avoid Nihonto because they're expensive and it seems like it takes quite a bit of expertise if you want to buy one with any confidence that it's legit. But this one was so cheap I decided...

Turns out the larger of the two has a brass blade so I presume it's just a souvenir.

The other one's actually a sturdy little knife with an integral bolster. I've been using it to sharpen my...

Baby Bousaadis

I don't think I've ever seen a Bousaadi this size before. First one is 11 cm, second one is 14.5 cm. They don't look they were cut down from larger blades. Neither came with a sheath.

Do you think...

That makes sense. The blade in this is double edged, aren't pedants usually single edged? Maybe it's from a junk keris

Could you really shank someone with a hilt like that though? It doesn't look very comfortable . I guess I'll find out when it arrives.

I thought it might be a snapped off tip of a keris but that wouldn't explain the tang. The seller said he bought it from a keris dealer.

Is this a Tombak?

I don't think it is, it's missing that ring near tang and the tang is rectangular rather than circular. I don't know what else you'd call it, though. The seller said both sides of the blade are sharp.

Knife from Mustang, Nepal

According to Wikipedia, Mustang is a heavily Tibetan region of Nepal, so it's not surprising this knife looks rather Tibetan. But it's different enough that I thought it would good to post it here....

Interesting, thank you for the link. Mine has nicks in the edge and the tip is sort of smashed in, as if it stabbed into something hard. So whatever its purpose, it seems to have been put to hard...

I've shown this teapot to several Mongolian antique collectors and none of them know what it is. The writing means nothing (one said it might be a mantra, another said it might be a baby's lullaby)...

It arrived today. It's a rather delicate and thin compared to my other keris. It's a bit rusty but not too bad. The tang is really long, too long to fit any of my other ukirans. I'll give it a soak...

Thanks for the advice everyone. When it arrives I'll clean the wood and try to find a matching one on eBay . In the mean time I do have an ukiran from a 50's era tourist keris that will probably fit....

Choosing a Ukiran

I just picked this Keris blade up for a pittance. It appears to be missing the ganja, ring, and ukiran. I presume there's nothing to be done about the missing ganja, but I would like to buy a new...

I don't see any worm holes anywhere else on the hilt or scabbard. Just some bumps and dings. The repair definitely doesn't fit the hole perfectly, you can see some wood filler around the edges. But...

Jeesh, somebody really went to great lengths to keep this scabbard going.. I wonder if these repairs were made in Java or the west.

Okay, I'll lightly sand it down, stain it, and oil it.
