Yest they existed and started on 16th C estoc swords or Tuck as in the picture. Later also on rapiers, but these are rare. These blade were thick at the base and long , like 100cm or more and longer....

As a former Napoleonic collector im also a sucker for 18thc C French swords and certainly like this...

I agree with Philip, the pommel is from a shiavona, the blade possibly and the guard is from a walloon type or German type veld degen.
The guard is 18th c but indeed composit and recently peened.

It is indeed mid 16th c and very rare as it is, its even more rare to find it in a condition like this uncleaned and unmolested . For rapiers or swords this rare the condition matters less than items...

The only thing replaced on the rapier is the pommel cap.
One could debate if this is a rapier or a sword, In Italy they used larger blades in they'r rapier guards more often.
