If the sheath doesn't fit...

Ian,

A sun with a face and eight rays was on the flag of the Philippine resistance against the Spanish (and later the US). I count eight rays on the sun on the sheath (three on the top, three on...

Convex In All Cases

francantolin,

The hilt on mine is on correctly. The difference between your blade and mine is that the spine on yours curves down to meet the straight edge but on mine the edge curves up to meet...

Same Shape, Different Edge

Hi All,

This is making my eyes go crazy. I have and example with the same type of tip but the cutting edge on mine is on the curved side and the spine is straight (with a 7.25” [18.415cm] false...

Philippine Examples

Ian,

Here are examples of this type of sheath from my collection. All the blades are plainly from the Philippines. In the cases where the entire sheath is present, the blades fit the sheaths. The...

To the Moderators,

I have been having an intermittent problem getting into the ethnographic discussion forum for two days now. The problem happens with Safari and Firefox. Below are the messages...

Philippine

Hi Lee,

The sheath is northern Philippine without doubt (Vasayan IIRC). If you are interested, I can post examples in my collection. I see nothing about the dagger itself that is inconsistent with...

I have Another B

Ian,

I have a kris that is very similar to your example B. The greneng on mine is a bit more conventional and mine lacks the ganja line but the ganja area is heavily curved and narrow like yours....

Condong Lelah Discussion

Regarding Alan Maisey’s footnote,

The practical reason for this angle (Condong Leleh) was discussed in this thread (http://vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=5174) started by Michel on Sept. 3,...

Hanging Hole?

The hole in the blade may well have been from a different hilt mounting but isn't equally plausible that it was made as a mounting hole to display the dagger on a wall or plaque?

Sincerely,

I vote for Sarajevo w/Bone Hilt

Hi gp,

Nice dagger. The hilt decoration looks like Sarajevo work to me. Although humble, I don’t think it’s tourist because it appears to have been carefully made and there isn’t any cheap bling...

aspalathos,

No Doubt Important

“Personally, I’ve always questioned the true historical and cultural value of the objects we collect, particularly when it comes to antique arms. Is their worth found in craftsmanship, aesthetic...

Another Odd Ball

Thanks for your responses. I seem to have a penchant for things that don't quite fit. While I tend to agree with David R’s Sürmene attribution, I have also noted the blade shape as mentioned by...

Ottoman Empire? Dagger for ID

Hi All,

I recently got this knife and have finally gotten around to start to clean it. I suspect that it is from somewhere in the Ottoman Empire but since that covers a lot of territory and a lot...

What a Relief

A G Maisey,
Thanks for the information. I’m glad I don’t have to hunt up a new selut.

David,
Not only does your example have a wooden selut like mine, it also has a uwer, so I am good all the...

Balinese Keris Wood Selut

When I got this Bali keris it had this wood selut fitted to the horn kocet kocetan hilt and I added the uwer. I don’t know if the selut is original to the piece but looking at it from the...

I Vote For Tool

Ian,

Very interesting piece. I am leaning toward tool. The shape of two prongs would allow them to be used as nail pullers. If the blade were to be thrust forward so that the nail head would catch...

Yvain,

I did a search using “batisse knife” and found these two sites on line. The first site listed shows a knife with a blade identical to yours but the hilt is different. The example shown is...

I'll Leave It As Is Then

Ian,

Thanks for the good news. A marriage that old should be left intact. What the 19th century hath joined, let no collector (or dealer) cut asunder.

Sincerely,

I Fear the Worst

Ian,
Thanks for the link to your blade. While the guard on your dagger is asymmetrical, it isn’t as emphatically so as mine is with its knuckle bow. Also the hilt on yours is fittingly symmetrical...

Not only does your response show how common a ferrule at the bottom of the gandar is, it shows that I have a good degree of design latitude for making my reproduction. The one thing that...

Odd Ghost on Bugis Gandar

As you can see, a pretty straight forward Bugis keris (9 luk, 14.24” [36.195cm] blade) with a missing buntut. The thing that puzzles me is what appears to be the ghost of a metal band...

From what I have read, the sharp knife (karda) is used for cutting tasks that the khukri is too big for. I have read that the knife without an edge (chackma, chackmash) is used as the steel component...
