Camoga,

I’m not a professional restorer, just a history enthusiast and amateur collector. I agree with Jim’s statement that part of antique objects’ charm often lies in their ruggedness. I would...

As usual with these things you find more mention about the news in the English speaking than the local press. Maybe locally there is so much stuff in the ground that it’s not that newsworthy? I even...

Makers’ marks make collecting much more interesting, but has frustrations on it’s own. I recognize the mark but can’t recall the name now... The marks on polearms seem less known than swords. This...

It looks like a rather efficient polearm. A volgue is basically a meat cleaver on a pole. I think the hinge contraption aids the cut by sliding the edge slightly. Then like the multi-purpose Swiss...

Congrats on the expanded collection! I particularly like the sturdy Swiss halberd. I have a similar one but with a longer spike and a hook. Don’t despair of the item with the shortened haft as these...

I think yours is a version with an axe blade at one side and the hammer on the other? I think the Poles call them czekan and the Hungarians fokos. There are so many different versions. Generally it...

Fernando, the photo you posted is of a Polish war hammer I believe, some of which had a protrusion at the top and hence the langet (some could even be used as walking sticks!). I have not seen those...

17thC Horseman’s hammer

Hi,
This object was described as a 17thC Eastern European horseman’s hammer (Reiterhammer) in an auction. I think it’s most likely Hungarian. The wooden haft is obviously a modern replacement. The...

Jasper,

The size of the blade, choice of grip, and presence of a sea dog (some say dolphin?) on the upper guard supports the idea of maritime use. The figure looks like a saracen, not sure if...

Dealers may say a lot of things. The grip looks like an 18th or 19thC infantry man’s hanger. The guard looks a bit outsize but maybe just my imagination? When encountering items of brass it’s always...

Yours doesn’t look very Hungarian (e.g. grip, pommel) so I wouldn’t rule out Indian origins although my knowledge of the latter is very limited. That kind of brass grip looks quite early 19thC to me.
