Fair point. Rather than "currently" I should have said "recently" as in the last 5-10 years. I'm just wondering if it was/is a live tradition over there.

It arrived in the mail today. My impressions:

The blade is extremely thick and heavy. It's 8mm thick at the base. It has no flex whatsoever. The steel's heavily pitted and the edge is all chewed...

Thank you. It sounds like there's no way to aggressively remove the rust without damaging the koftgari. I'll just have to settle for stabilizing the active rust and then leave it be.

Out of...

Thanks. The back of the hilt and scabbard only have a little koftgari on them, I'm going to try to clean that side by covering it with a tissue soaked in coca cola for a few hours. I'll see if it...

It does appear to be koftgari. Some of it is actually peeling up. It also has the tell tale crosshatching that the koftgari's applied to.

Edit: I should add that I'm obviously no expert on these...

Thanks! I like it alot better than my other Takouba. This one feels more like a sword than just a sword shaped piece of sheet metal.

Another sign of wear and tear I noticed - the front of the...

Cleaning a rusty khanjar without removing koftgari

I assume this is a Syrian Khanjar but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also assuming the decorations are koftgari and that they were done with silver.

As you can see, it's very very rusty and I'd...

I know the man in the moon faces originated in Europe, but the ones I've seen on European blades seem to usually be larger and very ornate. I thought these smaller simpler ones were usually locally...

Tulwar with "dukari" mark

This ended about a week ago on e-bay and unfortunately I didn't win it. I don't know the first thing about tulwars, but the shape of the blade on this one seems very atypical. Also of interest is...

Determining age of Takouba

I'm sure everybody's tired of these "run of the mill" Takoubas, but I just got this one in the mail and it's giving me mixed signals of how old it is. On the one hand it's in great condition and the...

Thank you, I will. The more I look the more I think it's just a "meed mor" Thai amulet knife. I found this one with a very similar handle shape and very similar markings on the blade. Of course the...

Here's a better picture of the front where the seam is. It's pretty obvious from this angle that it's a seam and not a flaw in the material. Also a picture of the back of the head.

I attached a...

Here's the pictures.

First up is the writing on both sides of the knife, assuming it is writing. It doesn't look like any writing system I've seen on wikipedia, but it doesn't look like random...

Thanks both, it does appear to indeed be a Guom sword. I read these were influenced by French style sabers hence the somewhat European features. I looked through google for other images of Guoms and...

The hilt seems to be attached with super glue, so maybe it's a recent repair/addition to a legitimately old knife. Or maybe the whole thing is a sloppy tourist piece.

It arrived in the mail today, I'll upload photos when I get home.

The blade has nothing approaching an edge on any sides. So I don't think it was ever meant to do actual work. Either talismanic...

Some sort of naval saber?

I just won the auction for this. The seller didn't have much to say about it other than that it was old, the grip was horn, and that it was possibly a marine saber. It's only 65cm long. Does anybody...

Thanks for the tips everyone. There's a bunch of Thai and Burmese restaurants near where I work, maybe I'll bring it around once it arrives and see if anybody there can ID it.

That looks like a dead ringer for the figure on the handle. I guess it's Burmese after all. Dare I ask what hamster bone is?

Vietnamese talismanic knife?

Just won the auction for this. The seller thought it was Vietnamese from the early 20th century but who knows how he came to that conclusion. It's only 18.5 cm long so it must be some sort of amulet...

I've been looking at pictures of briquets and it seems like every country under the sun made them for 150+ years. Most have inspection marks but some don't. From viewing threads about them on other...

I cleaned up the newly exposed ricasso as best I could, but I don't see any markings. You'd think if it was a mid 19th century or newer blade it would have some sort of inspection stamps on it. Also...

Thanks both. I've been looking at the blade closely to see if there are any faint markings that might provide a hint, but so far nothing. They may be hidden by the hilt. There is an "S" shaped thing...
