I dunno, I don't think it would be that involved. I'm sure an art or religions scholar, someone who knows his field down pat, would tell us the origin of this thing, without delving into the wood. ...

Your thoughts on the origins of this piece? Hindustan?

I bought this plaque/altar[?]/thing a few miles from Grand Canyon 10 years ago, from a journey-man dealer in ethnic souvenirs and antiques. He didn't know where it was from.
I liked the...

That is a good-looking cutlass. The blade is probably imported, the hilt may be American. If the antler handle turns out to be from an American species of deer, that would cement the attribution to...

I believe I know from whence the wind is blowing regarding the attribution as a Venetian boarding weapon.

Thank you very much! It's a great link, and something I had no idea about. An umbrella and a crown, a royal symbol of Hindus [Mughals?] and an ostensibly western royal symbol are pictured together.

The script may resemble the runic characters, but in a way of imitation. I don't think there is any meaning to them in the conventional sense, i.e. these are not abbreviations of anything in the...

I've perused my books on the Indian arms and did not see anything even remotely similar to the hilt and/or the decorations on the blade.

Here's another photo of the front of the blade. Note the crown underneath the umbrella. I am really angry with myself for not taking a better photo of the figure on the other side of the blade.

Has anyone seen anything similar to this sword?

I've only spent a couple of minutes looking at this sword, and the blade initially reminded me of nimchas, because of its smaller size and abrupt curvature. The script looked amharic, but an expert...

Ahh, but this isn't about Egypt. :)

In respect to the Greek-provenanced pieces, I have noticed that the blades of Greek knives, for instance, tend to be inscribed in Greek, and sometimes dated in...

Laz Bichaq - Black Sea Yatagan

My new acquisition - a very pretty, small Laz Bichaq, blade is only 53 cm., with the scribed and bras-inlaid decorations of much better quality than most examples I have seen. On the reverse side of...

Hi,
A sword with a similar hilt is in the Cesta Castle armour collection, in San Marino. Perhaps CAVALO MARINO has something to do with the locale? [San] Marino Cavalry?

I knew I saw the guard before, in another incarnation.
Now it's clear to me that someone had a processional sword guard at hand, removed the quillons, and put the hilt together.
