Chinese fakes can be very convincing, but -I think- the top one is a typical late 19th C. niuweidao/proto-niuweidao. The scabbard may be new wood. The best way to tell is to look at the mouth of...

Just in reference to the "spiral formation" mentioned in the first post. It is a batu lapak or saddle stone, supposedly a sort of magical imprint of the smith's thumb in the steel. The pamor batu...

I am a little unsure about how all the details work, but there is a ranking system to horn color in Indonesia. In wayang kulit, dark horn is fit only for crude creations and is usually seen on...

That is a good call with the crescent moon symbolism and Mary. I would not have thought of that, but it is indeed a common associacion. A common Christian millenialist symbol was a circle with a...

high end Chinese fakes
There seems to be some better made fakes entering the market where the workmanship and aging is higher quality than usual.

That is interesting. I have seen both of the patterns on the barrel on Tibetan weapons including a matchlock. I don't know about formal names for the patters, but the chevron design on this barrel...

That is quite interesting. I can't place the fittings, but the blade form reminds me strongly of a Buganese parang. It definitely does not look like the golok types found from central Java to...

I love the swords in Ashok a Bollywood (Mumballywood  ) movie with many extras who seem to have brought their own swords. The only really bad one is the one held by Ashok himself.

simple Tibetan saber for comment
This is a saber from the Tibetan plateau region of Western China. The blade is high quality, but the scabbard is quite plain compared to Tibetan things one normally sees.
