Thanks. As far as maintenance goes, should I leave the blade as it is other than wiping it down with some oil? The entire blade is black.

Ngbandi sickle sword?

Another recent acquisition, the seller said it was from the Ngbandi people. Does that seem accurate?

I think the tip of the blade's snapped off. The inner curve of the blade is sharp, as well as...

I agree it isn't very old but I doubt it was made for tourists. It seems well worn and appears to have been handled a lot over the years.

I think it may have recently spent some time in a damp...

Thanks. It is thin and flexible like a crosscut saw. The only unsaw-like thing about it is the fuller, but its so shallow it may have been added later.

It has no edge though. It's almost as thick...

Manding sword

I just picked this one up, it seems to be pretty old. The artwork on the scabbard look burned or etched into the leather. I assume the ink they used was acidic and it eventually ate through the...

Thanks both. The inside of the belt loop is covered in some sort of white paste. I can scrape it off with my fingernail, so I think that paste would be gone if anybody had ever ran a belt through it....

Fair point. Do you think it's actually an antique, though? That belt loop just seems out of place on a Jambiya, I thought they usually tucked them into their belts.

I have no idea where I read about manufacture being moved to China so who knows if it's true or not. I know Khukri House makes a corvo but obviously not for military use.

Kurdish Jambiya?

At least that's what I assume it is. There aren't any decorations on the scabbard and there's a belt loop soldered to the back, which doesn't seem right. The blade shape is strange as well. I'm not...

I think I read somewhere that they stopped making military corvos in Chile a few years ago, and that current military issue ones were being made in China. I can't find any source online for modern...

Thanks. It arrived a couple days ago and the repair does look pretty old. There's a smaller cut right next to it that I guess wasn't large enough to be worth repairing. I wonder how effective these...

I saw a similar European sabre with Tuareg looking scabbard go up for auction a few months ago. But the blade and hilt on this one are obviously European and not some native facsimile.

An anecdote about Uzbek pichok knives

A little while back I bought a pichok, not nearly as nice as the ones you got but nice enough. It seemed sturdily built and sharp as a razor, and I intended...

I could see a dagger like that being useful in the peculiar way that Mongolians slaughter sheep. They poke a small hole in the sheep's belly/abdomen, stick their fingers in the hole, and pinch off...

Dhal with repair

I just won this shield at auction, and I didn't notice until just now that there appears to be a repair on the dhal in the middle of the bottom of the shield. It looks like a pair of metal braces...

I agree the Mongolian attribution is spurious. Perhaps because the drokpa are also nomads the previous owner thought they were ethnic Mongols.

As to if this thing is real or a Chinese made...

My guess is that the "dogpa" the seller was referring to are the Drokpa people, who are apparently Tibetan nomads.

It arrived today. It doesn't look like it used to have a longer crossguard that snapped, it looks like it was just made this way. There's a small panel nailed to the hilt that seems to be made out of...

I think it'll be apparent whether or not it's a fake when I hold it in my hands. If it's a sturdy knife that looks like it wasn't 100% made in a factory in China I'll consider it a keeper.

While...

Hmm, maybe its a newer style. I'll keep an eye on eBay for similar ones.

That other one came from a seller in Ulan baatar so I'm pretty confident its Mongolian. Obviously a work knife rather than...

It does look a little bit like the lothi in your second link. What struck me as most different about this one compared to what you usually see is that the scabbard is sort of bow shaped rather than...
