Hello,

Excited and pleased to share with you an unusual piece- a Sinan Gabriela Silang/Gabrila bolo with a 'ganado' blade profile.

It was given as a souvenir by the late Governor Carmeling P. Crisologo (first woman governor of Ilocos Sur: 1964-1971).

(with engraving on the side of the blade: I have put some chalk to what we can read the inscription).

The seller is an old woman (from Ilocos Sur) and this particular bolo was given to her husband.

Enjoy

It would be nice to see the entire blade of this piece.

Very nice piece!

It appears to be genuine albeit in rather poor condition.

However, with some minimally invasive cleaning it can be brought back to its former glory.

Thank you for sharing! :)

PS: DO NOT CLEAN IT TOO MUCH because removing its "patina" will also decrease its value dramatically.

Ilocano traditional blades are underrated. I've seen a ganado before, but kinda different from this, the one I saw had wider blade and the tip is rounder. Does it have variations?

Very nice and well provenanced piece from Ilocos Sur. Good quality work on the blade and hilt in a traditional Ilokano black leather sheath that has remained in good shape. Congratulations on finding this one.

Nice piece and like Ian mentioned before with good provenance. Not long ago a Sinan Gabriela bolo with different blade profile was offered here in Germany for sale, sadly I was bid out by the auction. I guess it's from the same time frame. 65 cm long.

Detlef

Yves, thanks for the terminology. Do these terms have English translations?

Lorenz Lasco has a graphic somewhere wherein he listed all of those terms and which part of the sword they refer to.
