Well, as someone who seems to be especially prone to pareidolia i also see faces in the vegetal design of these hilts. I suppose it is debatable if these faces are intentional or not, but to me it seems likely that as Islamic restrictions on depicting human form came into play this was the result.

Personally, I'd like a different name for them, but I've never heard one.

Yes, I also would like a different name for them, personally I see a apparent resemblance to floral putra satu hilts.

One always wonder about the history of these pieces. For instance, what happened to the seluts? Were they very nice and sold off at some point or did they simply wear out or get lost because they weren't nice? What kinds of people owned this kind of knife when it was first made? Being from Madura was this a soldier's sidearm?

It looks like there is an occasional face hidden in the vegetation of these.

In my head I think of two solutions:
Either the Seluts were in silver y and we were sold at a time when the family needed money.
Either they were damaged during disassembly for the ritual cleaning of the blade and once too damaged they were removed.

Agree with the statement from Séverin, look for example to the one from him where the selut is still present.
