1073 - Philippine Working Cleaver / Knife with Sheath

This utilitarian implement has a forward weighted single edged blade widening from a narrow neck bearing a pair of stamped marks on one side (possibly depicting a bird in flight). Overall length of the blade from the hilt is just under 11 inches (28 cm) with a thickness of 0.27 inch (0.68 cm) at the neck tapering to 0.14 inch (0.36 cm) just before the turn to form a squared off end. The darkened portions of the blade retain evidence of manufacture by forging while the bevels to the edge are bright steel revealed by honing. The hilt is made of wood and there is a band of spirally wound braided wire reinforcing the blade end of the hilt. This chopper is accompanied by a wooden scabbard made of two halves bound together with bands of woven rattan to one of which has been attached a loop of synthetic green cord. Overall sheathed length is 16½ inches (42 cm) with a weight of about 14½ ounces (415 grams).
