1013 - African Baule Tribe Battle Dagger / Short Sword

Though curving to an asymmetric tip, the 16½ inch (42 cm) blade is double edged. A very low central midrib is present with a broad shallow on either side before a slight thickening as the edge is approached. Much of the blade is dark, though areas appear to have been cleaned and there is much evidence of old light to moderate pitting and a small distortion along one edge. The hilt is composed of dark wood, well carved and decorated with numerous brass tacks that appear well word. The end of the hilt is formed by a crown like iron wire cage. A few old losses to the wood and the wire cage and missing tacks may be seen in the photographs, but do not badly deface the specimen. A leather sheath accompanies the dagger and shows old scuff marks and patches of surface layer loss. Overall sheathed length is 21¾ inches (55.5 cm) with a weight of 19½ ounces (564 grams ).
