188 - East African Turkana Tribe Ararait (Wrist Knife)

The ararait or wrist knife is a specialized weapon once used in close quarters combat by the Turkana Tribe in Kenya (East Africa). The blade is made of a circular or elliptical plate of iron or steel, beveled and sharpened along its outside perimeter and having a central cut out to accomodate the wrist that is lined with hide or leather from which there is a radial cut out allowing insertion of the wrist from the side. The thickness of the plate in this example is 0.06 inches (0.15 cm). When not in use the edge is covered with a grooved rawhide cover having metal ends. Overall dimensions are 5¾ inches (14.7 cm) wide by 5 inches (13 cm) with the cover in place; overall weight is about 3½ ounces (96 grams). Lew dated this example to the mid twentienth century.
