179 - African Congo Ngbandi / Azande Curved Sword

A large double-edged saber with a broad tapering 31¾ inch long blade that has a single fuller on each side, offset from each other in cross-section. Simple decorative engravings are present upon each blade face. The oval wooden hilt has a grip wrapped by a spiral of copper strip with a cleft following the adjacent fuller. The pommel is of bare dark wood with a crack and small losses, but overall in sound condition. Lew dated this example as circa 1900. Overall length is 36 inches with a weight of about 33 ounces.
