150 - East African or Beja Tribe Spear, late 19th to early 20th Century

Lew cataloged this spear as East African, possibly Beja, and circa 1890 to 1900 and noted that this spearhead would ring when struck. The leaf shaped blade starts towards the tip with a low midrib and flat facets. The midrib continues between a pair of broad fullers that follow the arc of the cutting edge along one edge and a fairly straight boundary with a rib that widens to form a short neck and socket. A collar of woven and wrapped thin brass wire covers much of the neck. The spear blade is darker towards the tip and on one side where it has received less cleaning. The blade measures 12½ inches (32 cm) with overall spearhead length being 20 inches (51 cm). The wooden shaft retains the bumpiness from where branches had once arisen. The butt is wrapped by a spirally wound strap of iron 5¼ inches (13.5 cm) in length. Overall length is 55½ inches (141 cm).
