128 - West African Manding Dagger, Mid 20th Century

A nicely made West African single-edged knife with a 9¾ inch blade with a narrow fuller along the back of each face. The guard and ferrule adjacent to the spherical wooden pommel are made of darkened brass and, echoing the ferrule adjacent to the guard is an apparent change in material appearing to be either horn or a different wood. A squared iron end-of-tang or tang button forms the finial. The red-brown and black colored leather and tan fiber sheath features intricately woven bands. The sheath has minor damage at the tip and scattered small defects that are not distracting and the blade has a few dark stains and there is a shallow cut to the wooden pommel. Lew dated this to the 1940s. Overall sheathed length is just over 15 inches with a weight of 9.6 ounces.
