116 - African Congo Konda Chief's Dagger

Though now somewhat darkened with age, this dagger remains impressive. A 3¾ inch diameter pommel is covered by numerous iron tacks on the top and around its periphery, with about half a dozen tack losses on the top. The round grip is bound with a coiled brass strip. The guard is mostly covered with brass, more so on one side that also includes three brass headed tacks as well as a few iron ones. The double-edged blade is about 13½ inches long with crisp incised decoration in a triangular area pointing towards a low raised midline on both faces. The 'fish-tailed' scabbard is made of wood with a dark finish having some dings and losses and an integral raised extension on one side is perforated for a cord. Lew dated this example as circa 1900. Overall length is about 19 inches with a weight of just over 28 ounces.
