101 - African Vende Tribe Small Axe, circa 1900

This small axe has a 15¾ inch long haft, tapering wider at the handle end and also as it approached the carved head. The wood has a nice dark patina with pleasing traces of the hand work employed in its creation. The curved blade has an about 1 inch curved edge and extends 5¾ inches from from the haft on the wider side and for 4¼ inches in a curve on the opposite side. Lew assigned this example to the Vende culture and dated it circa 1900. Overall weight is 6.8 ounces.
