90 - Small Tulwar Sword with Mechanical Damascus Blade with a Gold Koftgari Inscription

This sword has a tulwar style hilt of darkened iron with silver decoration applied over a cross-hatched background with patchy losses of the silver, especially over wear points. The 21 1/4 curved blade is sharpened along the convex edge and around the tip onto a short back edge. A broad shallow fuller is present on either side and there is faint evidence of of mechanical Damascus layers. A Gold Koftgari inscription on the spine of the forte of the blade is translated in Lew's notes as 'There is no hero like Ali and no sword like Zulfiqar.' Lew dated this sword to circa 1800. Overall length within a more recent dark maroon velvet scabbard is 26/1/2 inches with a weight of 27 ounces.
