17 - East African Somali Bilao Dagger, c.1890s

The 9¼ inch (24 cm) double edged blade exhibits the typical asymmetry of this type with a slight curving of the very low midrib to one side about three-fifths of the length from the hilt with the edges following that curve. The facets of the blade are concave with slight thickening just before the edge bevels. The blade is well patinated, having dark areas and also some fine shallow pitting; striations from honing are noted upon the bevels. The hilt is composed of water buffalo horn with an iron plate facing the root of the blade and another iron spacer before the hilt narrows to form a grip that is covered by leather that is still bearing hair over about 40% of its surface. Next to the front edge of the leather another iron spacer starts the narrow grip section. The hilt then widens before an iron pommel plate with two lateral triangular side spikes and a longer fluted iron central hexagonal spike capped by a brass tang button. A well fitting leather sheath shows some holes (losses) on its dark brown front face and a lighter color leather back with some decorative leather bands at either end with some losses in the group at the tip. The dagger without the sheath measures 16 inches (40.5 cm) in length and weighs just under 7¼ ounces (209 grams). Overall length within the sheath is 16 3/8 inches (41.5 cm) with an overall weight of just over 9¼ ounces (270 grams).
